As more people arrive from more places, confusion can grow.
We talk in different languages. We have different cultural styles — manners, customs, body language. Even if we speak the same language, we can express ourselves in very different ways.
How to adapt? English classes are packed with students. Schools, banks and churches have launched efforts to help newcomers navigate their new lives. Children of immigrants, who often pick up English quickly, pitch in as well.
Still, communication gaps cause great frustration.
