I think that no one should still be calling other ethnic groups "them". They deserve to be like any other person. We are all equal and we shouldn't put others down on what they look like or talk like. We shouldn't names for groups, we are all individuals and we should treat others the way we want to be treated.

Flowers in the church

I grew up in a Presbyterian church, and the flowers placed in the santuary on Sundays were often placed in celebration, in honor, or in memory of someone, with the info included in the bulletin and announced at some point in the service. I never thought much about it until I recently attended my hometown church, admired hydrangeas from and in honor of a wedding the day before, for someone I had known years ago. It made me reflect on how through that simple gesture, people shared with each other, and how much I learned about the church family in the years I went there. On occasions such as Easter, the bulletin had extra pages, though you barely had to read it. The lillies filling the santuary and windows spoke volumes about loved ones who were missed and remembered, families who were cherished, and friendships that endured and were appreciated. During Christmas, poinsettas did the same.

This Land will complement our regular coverage published in the paper and online. We’ll bring you new voices and analysis. We’ll also point you toward interesting stories, studies, photography, and videos.

As the main author of This Land, my goal is to find a balance between the fact that the United States is both a country made of immigrants and a nation of laws.

There is a comments section and I hope you will take advantage of it. This is an emotional topic, but I don’t see why we can’t have a healthy, spirited dialogue. And it’s a good place to get your perspective heard. We had over 3,500 people check out the blog on the first three days alone.

Indian Food

I had lunch from Copper for the first time last week and it was fantastic! I don't eat a lot of Indian food, and I have a pretty low tolerance for spicy dishes, but this was excellent. If you've never been, Copper is located at 311 East Blvd., very close to the intersection of South and East.

Kosher Pastrami on Christmas Eve

My grandfather was raised in the Jewish faith in Savannah, Georgia. My grandmother came from a family of devout Methodists who called LaGrange, North Carolina their home. When they met in the late 40's while attending Duke University, they wondered if their different religious backgrounds would create tension amongst their families or for the family they hoped to build together. They agreed to raise their children, my mother and two uncles, in the Methodist church, but insisted that their children be exposed to the Jewish culture. I don't know how, why or when it began, but one of the traditions that we carry today to help us remember our Jewish heritage is serving only Kosher deli meats for sandwiches for lunch Christmas Eve. Of course the Christmas Holiday doesn't correspond with the Jewish calendar, but it's a day where our entire family is together and can appreciate our heritage.

I finally found Kavkaz. The "Middle Eastern & Eastern European Cuisine" restaurant that is on Stallings Road right off of Independence. If you haven't been there take Independence towards Monroe, make a right on Stallings Rd. Go down about a block and it's across from the water tower.

You must go. Lunch today was marvelous. It's really an Armenian restaurant. They almost have their full liquor license. This Sunday evening they will have live music. So far just a soft opening. Grand Opening should happen next weekend (?). Very nice people working very hard to please and very grateful for the business. We have to help this one survive.
